1. What is meant by indian knowledge system?

Answer:
        The Indian Knowledge System refers to the vast and rich collection of knowledge that has developed in the Indian subcontinent over thousands of years. It includes literature, art, philosophy, science, mathematics, medicine, social practices, and cultural traditions that reflect the wisdom of Indian civilization.

🌸Introduction :-
         The word “Indian” in IKS refers not only to the modern nation of India but to the entire Indian subcontinent, known in ancient times as Akhanda Bharata. This area stretched from present-day Afghanistan in the west to Myanmar (Burma) in the east, and from the Himalayas in the north to the Indian Ocean in the south. 
   
          Many kingdoms and rulers, it shared common cultural values, beliefs, and educational traditions. For example, Chanakya (Kautilya) studied at Takshashila in the west and helped establish the Mauryan Empire in the east. Similarly, Panini, the great Sanskrit grammarian from Gandhara (now in Pakistan), influenced the study of language throughout India. This shows how knowledge and ideas freely moved across the subcontinent.

            The word “Knowledge” in IKS includes both written and oral traditions. In ancient India, knowledge was often passed down through oral learning, from teacher  to student.

            Knowledge was gained through experience, observation, experimentation, and reasoning. It covered not only spiritual and religious topics but also practical subjects like astronomy, mathematics, medicine, architecture, and governance. For example, Ayurveda deals with health and healing,the Arthshastra focuses on economics and administration, and the Vedas contain ideas about science, nature, and philosophy. Knowledge. 

             The Indian Knowledge System thus shows an interconnected approach, linking spiritual, moral, and practical understanding.

             The purpose of the Indian knowledge system is not only provide it creat a ethical living, inner peace, intellectual inquiry, balanced,wise,and responsibilities human being.



2. Explain the role of vedas in indian knowledge system (IKS).

Introduction :-
    The Vedas play a very important role in the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) as they are the oldest and most foundational sources of knowledge in Indian tradition. 
       
The four vedas :-
 
1. Rigveda :- focus on hymns and philosophy.
2. Samaveda :- deals with music and chants.
3. Yajurveda :- gives details about ritual and social duties.
4. Atharvaveda :- includes knowledge of medicine and everyday life.


Role of Vedas in IKS

1. Foundation of Knowledge

The Vedas are considered the primary source of Indian knowledge. Many later traditions such as the Upanishads, Vedanta, Ayurveda, Yoga, and Dharma literature developed from Vedic thought.

2. Spiritual and Philosophical Guidance
The Vedas discuss the nature of Brahman, Atman, creation, truth, and the purpose of life. These ideas became the basis of Indian philosophy and spiritual traditions.

3. Moral and Ethical Values
Vedic teachings encourage truth (Satya), righteousness (Dharma), self-discipline, compassion, respect for elders, and social responsibility. These values remain important in Indian culture and education.

4. Scientific and Practical Knowledge
The Vedas contain early observations related to astronomy, mathematics, agriculture, health, and environmental awareness. Atharvaveda especially includes knowledge connected with healing and everyday life.

5. Development of Ayurveda
Ayurveda traces many of its principles to Vedic literature, particularly the Atharvaveda. Ideas about health, balance, herbs, and well-being emerged from this tradition.

6. Contribution to Music and Arts
The Samaveda is the source of Indian musical tradition. Its melodic chanting influenced classical music, devotional music, and the understanding of sound as a sacred medium.

In ancient India, education was based on vedic learning. Students learned discipline, concentration, memory, and moral conduct through the guru-shishya tradition. Thus the vedas influenced the indian system of knowledge.
